The Best Homemade Taco Seasoning

It’s Taco Tuesday!

You are at the store, list in hand, ready to grab all of the ingredients needed to make the ever so familiar, mouthwatering Mexican favorite.

You walk up to the spice aisle and gaze down the overwhelming variety of spice packets. You set your sights on an “Original” seasoning mix and at the last second, opt for the “low sodium” version just to the right of it, because it’s “healthier”…

You walk happily to the checkout with your fresh tomatoes, avocados, onion, and cilantro laying in the cart right next to this newly obtained seasoning packet.

This (still very) sodium-packed, preservative loaded, and other questionable ingredients filled seasoning packet.  Which doesn’t actually pair too well (nutritionally) with these fresh, nutrient-rich ingredients.

Seasoning Shake-Up

Let me start by saying that I know these (sometimes last-minute) steps all too well. I use to live for these packets. They were easy to use with little to no thought, guaranteeing Taco Tuesday to be a home-run hit every single time.

But what if I told you that making your own taco seasoning is not only easier, cheaper but also much much healthier?

When you make it yourself, the fresh spices you use to make your taco seasoning is full of anti-oxidants and immune boosting spices! WITHOUT preservatives or other added ingredients for flavor or coloring.

The Good. The Bad. The Ugly.

I should preface this by saying not all ingredients in pre-made packets are bad. Especially now that a lot of companies are doing better at recognizing and removing some of the additives.

Still.. your tacos don’t really need ingredients such as:

  • Sugar
  • Potato starch
  • Whey
  • “Natural flavors” – what are these said natural flavors?
  • Maltodextrin
  • MSG – they hide this under the name Autolyzed Yeast Extract
  • Cellulose

Fresh is Best

In my opinion, fresh anything is always best. Better tasting and better for you!

Plus, not only is making a jar yourself easy and customizable, but it will also save you a few buckaroos down the line. Especially if you are a weekly celebrater of Taco Tuesday.

There are a ton of different versions out there, but this one right here is the one that I tend to always gravitate towards. It’s simple and I always have these spices on hand.

I keep mine in a cute jar and refill it whenever it gets low. I have been thinking about adding turmeric to my next batch. What do you think of that?

Try a Lettuce Wrap!

Want to take one healthier step further? Instead of wrapping your delicious mix in a tortilla, try a beautiful green lettuce leaf!  My favorite lettuce to use is butter lettuce. The leaves are the perfect size and shape. Butter lettuce holds the taco mix like a bowl!

Plus,  butter lettuce is low in sodium, a good source of vitamin A, house tons of phytonutrients, contains antioxidant properties and vitamin K (which helps increase bone mass and promote bone health).

As the recipe note states: Use 2 tablespoons for every 1 pound of meat- or to taste, of course. Either use the mixture as is or add the seasoning & approximately  3/4 cup water to your meat.
